A proposed new bridge over the River Wear, part of the Sunderland Strategic Corridor project, has been awarded £82.6m from the Department of Transport.

The Chair of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority, Cllr Davie Wood, who has supported the bid, said:

“This is great news for the people of Sunderland and for residents across Tyne and Wear. It will bring significant benefits to Sunderland and the wider Tyne and Wear area including a reduction in congestion, enhanced connectivity between the city centre and the strategic highway network and substantial regeneration and jobs”.
